Plastic packaging has moved from a procurement detail to a broader supply-chain issue.
In April 2026, ABC News reported that Australian companies using plastic packaging were facing price pressure and supply disruption. One example was food-grade resin from Singapore, used in milk bottles, which ABC reported had increased by 110% since the start of the Middle East war. The same article noted that the pressure extended beyond dairy, with packaging impacts also being felt in areas such as cosmetics and soft plastics.
The issue was serious enough that, in May 2026, Australian Government ministers announced an industry roundtable to discuss current challenges facing plastics supply chains and possible solutions for sectors including dairy, fresh meat, food and grocery, plastics and packaging. The roundtable was set to review supply forecasts, alternate suppliers, cost minimisation and options to build domestic supply.
For warehouse, logistics and manufacturing teams, the message is clear. Packaging material choices are not just about price per roll, carton, strap or metre. They are part of operational resilience.
Most businesses cannot control global resin markets, shipping conditions or geopolitical disruption. What they can control is how well their own packaging system is specified, standardised and reviewed.
That does not mean replacing every plastic-based packaging material. In many applications, plastic packaging, stretch film, PET strapping, PP strapping or plastic tape may still be the correct choice. The goal is not to make quick changes that create new problems on the packing floor.
The better question is whether each consumable is still fit for purpose.
If a warehouse is using more tape than needed, over-wrapping pallets, switching between inconsistent strap grades or relying on workarounds because materials are hard to source, the real cost is usually higher than the invoice price. It can show up as rework, damaged loads, failed seals, slower dispatch and extra manual handling.
That is where a practical packaging review can help. Not a theoretical sustainability exercise, but a simple check of what is being used, why it is being used and whether the same result can be achieved with less waste and more consistency.
Packaging reform is also moving in the same direction. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says Australia’s packaging regulation is being reformed so packaging is designed in line with circular economy principles and can be recovered, reused, recycled and safely reprocessed.
That gives businesses another reason to review everyday packaging decisions now.
Tape, film and strapping are often treated as separate consumables, but in practice they work together. A stronger carton may need less tape. A better pallet wrapping process may reduce film waste. The right strap and tool combination may reduce damage and improve load security. A paper-based tape may suit some carton sealing applications, while a plastic tape may still be better for others.
The key is to avoid one-size-fits-all purchasing.

For carton sealing, that might mean reviewing the tape grade, adhesive type, tape width, dispenser or case sealing machine. For pallet wrapping, it might mean reviewing film performance, stretch settings, load type and operator process. For strapping, it might mean checking whether PET, PP or steel is the right material for the load and handling conditions.
The current pressure on plastic packaging is a reminder that “what we have always used” is not always the safest strategy.
Good packaging should protect the product, support the operator, reduce waste and stay reliable when the supply chain becomes less predictable. That is why everyday consumables deserve regular attention.
